Fawning Over Friday: Poets Joshua Bennett and Tanya Davis

Today’s Fawning Friday features two poets whose work I am adoring. One young African American male and one Atlantic Canadian girl. Both of these young talents have a beautiful way with words.

Joshua Bennett: This young man’s poetry is gorgeous. I just found him (via my friend Tad’s Facebook page) and I fell hard. I pretty much forgot to breathe listening to him.

This boy has a way with words. In his poem “Lords of the Fly” (dedicated to his “socially awkward” best friends) he describes a woman he admires from afar as a “5ft9 John Coltrane solo with an extra helping of gorgeous” – Ahhhhh – and describes his friends as a “card deck full of kings”.

Now, get out your tissues…

Tanya Davis has been gracing Halifax with her music and poetry for a number of years. It wasn’t until I met her at my shop, that I began really noticing her work. I listen to her album Gorgeous Morning so often that if it were a record it would be probably be worn and scratchy. (Thesaurus is one of the first songs I played and danced with Ollie to calm him. It worked. Could he now be Tanya’s youngest fan?) Lately Tanya has been all over the blogosphere because of her amazing video How To Be Alone written by Tanya and created by Andrea Dorfmann. So if you haven’t seen it, here it is.

Happy Friday everyone!

For the Love of Poetry

Even though Bill Murray has been accused of some not so flattering personal attributes, I kinda love him a little. It might be that his face reads mischieviousness and vulnerability. It might be his dry humour and quick wit. And then there is his acting – Lost in Translation- sigh. I love Bill a smidge more after seeing this clip of him reading poetry to the Poet’s House construction crew on break.
