In my life, I am trying to abide by the rule of something in, something out. It helps reduce the crumbling piles of tshirts, overflowing sock drawers, and mile high piles of kid toys. The usual procedure is to bring the out-going item to a bin in the basement whose final destination is Goodwill. However, there are times when an article being replaced is too loved to be set free so quickly. Such was the case with one of my stripey longsleeves. I have had a love affair with this shirt for many years; I felt like it added a french je ne sais quoi to the wardrobe. But alas, my body had changed and before long this shirt looked shrunken and sad. Because my daughter is currently obsessed with all things French and will only wear (soft) dresses, I decided to convert my longsleeve into a jumper/tunic for her.

Project Time: 1 hour (ish)
Materials: One adult women’s shirt, a couple of long strips of alternative fabric, a threaded machine and some straight pins.
Simplified Process: 1. Following original seams, cut off sleeves (these could be cute legwarmers or armwarmers!!) 2. Fold one strip of alternative fabric in two and sew two loose stitches the length of the strip leaving “tails” of thread at either end. 3. Pull one end of the tails creating a gather. Do this making the strip a shorter gathered piece of fabric. 4. Pin on the gathered strip raw ends inside where original sleeve was attached. 5. Sew in place. 6. Repeat this gathered strip detail on the other arm 7. Add any other embellishment. I chose to make a pocket with matching ruffles. (My girl likes pockets.) You could do a cool applique here or patch or add something to the bottom.
